Dragon Boat Victoria is saddened by the passing of Jonathan Mayne (1938-2026), a pioneering figure in Victorian dragon boating and one of the sport’s most influential contributors. A highly decorated canoeist and kayaker with a remarkable 60-year paddling career, Jonathan helped establish dragon boat racing in Victoria alongside fellow founders Trevor Huggard, Peter Louey and David Wong, while also supporting the sport’s early administration with his wife, Jenny.
Renowned as a coach, mentor, commentator and storyteller, he generously shared his knowledge with countless crews and clubs, helping shape the culture of teamwork, enjoyment and inclusion that remains at the heart of the sport today. His enthusiasm, wisdom and dedication touched generations of paddlers, and his legacy lives on through the clubs he helped build, the athletes he inspired and the vibrant dragon boat community he helped create.
Dragon Boat Victoria extends its heartfelt condolences to Jenny, Sam, Melissa, family and friends, and thanks Jonathan for a lifetime of service to paddling and to our sport. Vale Jonathan Mayne.

| AusDBF Announce New Dates for Aus Champs 2027 |
Following the AFL’s announcement that Gather Round will be held from 8 – 11 April, AusDBF has reviewed the impact this may have on accommodation availability and costs for clubs planning to attend AusChamps in Adelaide.
The revised AusChamps dates are as follows:
Day 1. Saturday 24 April: Premiers, Juniors & BCP – 200m and 2km, including Opening Ceremony
Day 2. Sunday 25 April: Premiers, Juniors and BCP – 200m and 2km, including Dawn Service
Day 3. Monday 26 April: State Day Championship – 500m and turn race, including Flag Bearer Ceremony
Day 4. Tuesday 27 April: Seniors – 500m
Day 5. Wednesday 28 April: Seniors – 200m
Day 6. Thursday 29 April: Seniors – 2km |
| Footscray Regatta Survey Feedback to Members |
Thank you to all members who submitted a response to either the Athlete or Team Manager / Coach Survey following the July regatta in Footscray. DBV uses the responses to further evaluate our events and makes decisions based on the feedback received. In a new initiative for 2026/2027 season, DBV will extract the common themes and provide a response aimed at further explaining why a decision was made (in support of or against the feedback), or simply to better educate clubs and members on certain aspects of regatta administration. We feel this two-way approach will create a broader understanding of the challenges each stakeholder within DBV experiences - members, clubs and DBV.

| What To Do If You're A Single Paddler? |
DBV is often approached by paddlers who would like to participate in a regatta when their club is not attending. In these circumstances the best approach is to join the 'DBV Club Reps' page on Facebook and post some details about yourself and your availability. Clubs may require a paddler, sweep or drummer for their crews and DBV can assist with adding members of other clubs to crew lists within the designated timeframe. |
