DBV August 2020 Newsletter

DBV & Club Members update

Hi Members,

This update is provided for members as a follow-up to our recent engagement with Presidents & Treasurers via Zoom on Thu 13th Aug and our constant consultation with Vic Sport, Sport & Recreation Victoria and Vic Health to discuss strategies to navigate our way through the current COVID landscape in Victoria.

All current 2019/2020 DBV memberships are now to be further extended from 29 August until 11:59pm September 30, 2020.

These will be reviewed again during September and then on a month-by-month basis depending on circumstances. Decisions relating to commencing the 2020/2021 season will be based on government decisions at that time relating to restrictions. For membership to be valid in this September period members must have been registered with a DBV dragon boat club by 1 September 2020. As a result, clubs have two options - either extend their existing membership until September 30 at no charge, which is consistent with DBV's approach, or charge existing members a one-month Membership Fee. This is a decision for each club to make. The DBV Board will indicate the DBV fee structure for 2020-2021 when we are clear we can get back on the water.

Membership options for 2020/21 season

Despite the current COVID environment DBV has been working diligently with AUSDBF, RevSport and various sporting bodies to:

  • Review and enhance our current membership options for the upcoming season, ensuring we are offering better value memberships for those re-joining as well as new members
  • Develop new strategies to assist clubs to entice new members to the sport.

Once DBV has been provided the approval from the various governing bodies to launch the 2020/2021 season DBV will introducing a number of new membership arrangements and options. These include:

1) Rolling 12 month memberships.

2) 'Dragon Pass' - new way to try Dragon Boating.

3) Credit Card payments through Revsport and your member portal/profile.

4) 20/21 promotional memberships for new and returning members.

Details will be forwarded at a later date together with answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

Rolling 12 month memberships

Any person who joins or re-joins as a member will automatically receive 12 months membership from the date of payment. For example, if someone joins on Oct 20, 2020 their membership will expire on Oct 19, 2021 etc. This membership will replace the existing fixed 12-month membership currently offered (i.e. July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021).

“Dragon Pass” – new way to try dragon boating.

DBV has changed the process and structure for people wanting to try dragon boating. Once a prospective paddler has decided to attend a come and try dragon boating session they will need to complete an online come and try form called a ‘Dragon Pass’, which will be available on the DBV and your clubs website/social media. All previous come and try documents will no longer be valid. Any new paddler not using the Dragon Pass will not be covered by insurance. The Dragon Pass will be:

  • Valid for one month and free. (They can attend unlimited training sessions in that period)
  • This pass can be used at multiple DBV clubs
  • The person trying dragon boating would be able to attend one regatta within this one-month period (though they would be required to pay the racing fee)
  • People who have paddled for other interstate clubs will not be able to use the Dragon Pass
  • Clubs and trial members will get a notification when the Dragon Pass is due to expire
  • Parents are required to complete junior’s Dragon Pass.

Credit Card Payments via Revsport and your member portal/profile.

RevSport will now have the functionality to accept credit payments for memberships fees in the 2020/2021 season. Fees for online payments via Credit card are 2.0% + $1.60 AUD per transaction. This will be added to the charge to the credit card. This fee goes directly to RevSport, not to DBV or your Club.

2020/2021 promotional memberships for new and returning members

To assist members in a post COVID world return to dragon boating and to entice news members, DBV is working on a variety of promotional memberships for the 2020/ 2021 season. Once we have clearance to launch the 2020/2021 season DBV will provide further information - so watch this space!!!

Regatta Season

DBV is currently reviewing the 2020/2021 regatta season and will provide further updates in later communications as to how it will look in 2020/2021; however, we can provide these updates:

  • 'Battle on the Barwon' regatta scheduled for 13 Sept has been postponed, with any further date TBC
  • Both the 'Carrum' Regatta and Sweeps course scheduled for 10/11 Oct are cancelled
  • Decisions on Wodonga (7/8 Nov) and Melbourne (21 Nov) regattas will be reviewed in Sep/Oct.

Free Webinar - Retention and Participation in Sport

Wed 26th Aug 10:30am-12pm

Vicsport have, in partnership with Victoria University and Federation University and with support from VicHealth and Sport/Recreation Victoria collaborated to bring you this researched-based webinar.

Background

The Sport and Recreation Spatial research team (Victoria University and Federation University) has conducted the Sport Participation Research Project since 2015. The data that has come out of the project has helped sports to see trends in overall participation and retention and plan accordingly. During COVID, we have been limited in opportunities to share the general trends of the data with the greater sporting community.

The Webinar

This webinar will share the general trends in participation including retention and drop-out over the past years (2105 – 2018) and as well as ideas about how to retain members in the COVID period. This will include ideas that sports have already used to engage with members during COVID and some ideas for the future to use the date to retain members.

The webinar will be lead by Professor Rochelle Eime:

Professor Rochelle Eime is a Behavioural Epidemiologist who has over 15 years of research experience specifically relating to the sport and recreation sectors relating to both public health and sport management. Rochelle is the Director of the Sport and Recreation Spatial program of research which focuses on investigating sport and recreation participation, facilities and health for evidence-based decision making.

The key areas of focus are:

  • Participation levels and trends
  • Influences on participation
  • Value of sport: the health benefits of participation
  • Places to play: the nexus between facilities and participation

United Ladies on the Loire DAA - (By Margaret Keech DA Bendigo)

As I sit in the second lockdown in Bendigo Victoria, due to Covid -19, I have not been in a Dragon Boat or paddled with my fabulous Dragon Boating friends since March. My mind goes back to a very different time in August 2019 when I took part in the event of a lifetime - to Dragonboat along the Loire River in France.

Along with 32 ladies, a mixture of Breast Cancer survivors and supporters, from all over France, one from Italy, two from Ireland and we three from Bendigo in Australia. We were to paddle 250 km from Orleans to Pont de Ce (near Angers)

The event was first run in 2018 when a doctor involved with Dragon Boat Attitude in Annecy, France, thought a marathon paddle of this sort would be a wonderful show of strength, resilience and camaraderie for Breast Cancer survivors. The ladies were given the name United Ladies and the event was born
